Ukrainian Flag Support Pin --------------------------- Materials: KnitPicks Shine Sport yarn, in Dandelion and French Blue (or Sky) US #4 (3.5mm) knitting needles, or size D (3.25mm) crochet hook 4-5 locking stitch markers (optional) Tapestry needle Safety pin, ~1.5" (ideally coil-less and curved, as for quilting) Finished size: approx. 55 x 35 mm Version 1: Knitted Flat [~3 yds each color] (Adapted from Jen Mitchell's free pattern "Ukraine Flag Pin" at .) 1. With yellow, cast on 12 sts using any method, leaving 8" tail for seaming later (for long-tail cast-on, start with ~18" tail). 2. Work stockinette stitch for 9 rows, starting with purl row (WS). 3. Switch to blue yarn, leaving 8" tails for seaming later, and continue stockinette stitch for 10 more rows; bind off. 4. Fold top and bottom edges to the back so they meet in the middle. 5. Seam the sides using running stitch, mattress stitch, or similar, with the tails of corresponding color. It may be helpful to align and pin the matching rows of each edge with markers beforehand to guide your stitches. 6. Seam the back using either color, and weave in all ends. 7. Run safety pin through the blue section in back, just above the seam, and then slide the work around to the head side of pin. Version 2: Magic Loop [~8 ft each color] 1. With yellow and a 14" tail, use Judy's Magic Cast-on to create 12 sts on each needle (24 sts). 2. Knit around even for 5 rnds. 3. Switch to blue, leaving 6" tails to weave in later, and continue knitting around for 5.5 more rnds. 4. Cut yarn leaving a 16" tail, graft top closed w/ Kitchener stitch, and weave in all ends. 5. Attach safety pin as for flat version above. Version 3: Crochet [~7.5 ft yellow, ~6.5 ft blue] 1. With yellow and a 6" tail, ch 11. 2. Row #1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each sc across (10 sc). 3. Row #2: ch 1, turn, sc across. 4. Repeat row #2 two more times (4 rows sc). 5. Switch to blue, leaving 6" tails to weave in later, and repeat row #2 four more times. 6.
