cake

March 27, 2003, Center for Comparative Genomics and Bioinformatics. This is the "double birthday" cake for Francesca Chiaromonte and Ross. The cake was created by Janusch, husband of Hania Petrykowska, who was working in a creative bakery at the time. The cake has two mice, in honor of our work on the mouse genome sequencing and analysis project.

1984. The lab built a snowman outside Althouse Lab. Lying the snow are Joe Johnson and David Vandenbergh. Kneeling are Ross, Magdalena James (now Pederson), _________, and Laurie Raid. Standing are Debby Smith, Mark Rohrbaugh, Killian Brech, ___________ (could that be Bill Demers?), Jan-Fang Cheng, Jean Margot.

1981. Earliest known Hardison lab photo, taken in Ross' office when we were in the basement of Althouse Lab. In 2021, I added the following information on who these folks are what they did: Front "row" (left to right) has Donald Graham (kneeling with dark hair and beard; undergrad researcher who pursued a career in biotech [Genex Corp.] and Merck & Co, where he has retired as a senior scientist), Peter Yaciuk (behind Don; he may have been rotating in my lab when the photo was taken, then he got his PhD at PSU in 1988 with David Shalloway; now a Biotechnology Consultant after serving on the faculty at Saint Louis University), David Vandenbergh (grad student, PhD in 1987, now a Professor of Biobehavioral Health at Penn State), Jan-Feng Cheng (grad student, PhD in 1988, now a PI directing functional genomics at the Joint Genome Institute and LBL), Thomas Callaghan (standing, undergrad researcher, got a PhD from Case Western Reserve, now Chief Biometric Scientist for the FBI Laboratory's Biometric Analysis Section and senior DNA advisor for human identification). Back row has Mark Rohrbaugh (grad student, PhD in 1984, now the Special Advisor for Technology Transfer at the National Institutes of Health), David J. Shuey (undergrad researcher, then got a PhD from the California Institute of Technology and pursued a career in biotechnology), Joyce (Murphy) Morrison (research technician), Ross (still at Penn State, but beard and hair are not so dark!).
