These soap sacks have more decoration in the body and less at the top than the Three Sisters patterns. They are knitted in the round from the top down, with the bottom closed by grafting. They end up looking "seamless", but of course the graft is really a seam. :-) Materials: Worsted weight dishcloth cotton, about 30 yd per sack One 40" US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle for magic loop (or 2 circs, or dpns) Crochet hook, US 7 (4.5 mm) Diagonal Rib Soap Sack ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Measure out a tail of about 24", and cast on 32 st using the Estonian cast-on (http://newstitchaday.com/how-to-knit-the-Estonian-cast-on). Divide in half for magic loop and join in the round. Work 4 rounds of 2x2 diagonal rib stitch, as per the chart below. In the 5th round only, replace (p, p) with (yo, p2tog) to make eyelets. Continue the diagonal rib for a total of 33 rounds. Cut the working yarn, leaving a tail of at least 30". Use the tail to graft the bottom closed in pattern (second chart). Make an 18" crochet chain for the drawstring (ch 64), and thread it through the eyelets in round 5. This way the pairs match the ribbing better, and also the tail and join gap seem more solid. The first stitch looks odd when casting on, but it's fine after being knit. The piece looks impossibly narrow at first, but don't worry -- it will widen. Leave a very generous tail for grafting, especially if you like to sew it loosely and tighten it later. Before sewing the graft, run a lifeline through the loops on each needle, and put a removable stitch marker on the tail; this will help you to identify the loops when adjusting the tension afterward. Some dishcloth cotton has a rather loose twist, and the ssk will untwist it further and look bad. You can combat this by manually overtwisting the yarn for those sts in the previous row, and optionally also wrapping the yarn in the opposite direction when knitting those previous-row sts so they are created with a reverse mount (right leg in back). In that case the ssk becomes just k2togtbl. Grafting charts are explained at . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Designed by Cathy Riemer, Sep 2015.
