Susan Dinsmore's variation of Artisan Loops' "Pussyhat Brooch"*

Materials:
* A few yards of light-fingering weight yarn, in pink
* US #1 or #2 needles (two dpns, straights, or a circ)
* small cable needle or stitch holder
* small crochet hook
* tapestry needle

Finished size: about 1 inch tall

Hat is knit flat from bottom to top, then folded in half and seamed.

1) CO 25 st, leaving a 10" tail
2) Work 1x1 rib for 4 rows
3) Work stockinette for 6 rows, starting with a knit row and ending
   with a purl row
4) skp, k1, k2tog (= half of ear); k3 (= top of head); skp, k2, skp,
   k1, k2tog (= full second ear); k3 (= top of head); skp, k1, k2tog
   (= other half of first ear)
5) p3; turn w/o wrapping; (sl 1, k2tog, psso); cut w/ 4" tail and pull
   end through remaining st (half ear)
6) Transfer next 3 st to cable needle and set aside (top of head)
7) p6 with new yarn leaving a 4" tail; turn w/o wrapping; (sl 1, k2tog,
   psso) twice; cut w/ 4" tail and pull end through rem. 2 st (full ear)
8) Fold in half and use ending tail to seam down inside edge of full ear
9) Transfer next 3 st to empty needle (top of head), and then swap
   the remaining 3 st with those on the cable needle so that both sets
   of top-of-head sts are on the working needles with tips pointing
   away from the full ear
10) Use the crochet hook to join the top-of-head sts with a Russian graft
    (no new yarn needed), ending at the base of the full ear
11) Pull the ending 4" tail from the full ear through the remaining st
    on the hook to secure the join; then thread the tail to the inside
    of the ear and tie it to the starting 4" tail
12) Use the 10" tail from cast-on to seam up the open side of the hat
13) Still using that tail, k3 from the cable needle; transfer those sts
    back to the cable needle; (sl 1, k2tog, psso); pull end through
    remaining st (half ear)
14) Seam the two half-ears, then thread both tails to the inside of
    the ear and tie them together
