You can weave even if you don't have a big loom! We will be weaving on 4-inch pin looms. Instructions, resources, and project ideas will be provided. Come and learn this fun and very portable way to weave.

Materials:

  • If you have a pin loom please bring it; otherwise looms will be available to borrow for the day, but must be returned by 5:00 pm. If you will need to borrow one, please let us know in advance via email to CentreKnitters -at- gmail.com so we can plan to have enough on hand.
  • Yarn and instructional handouts will be provided.

12:30 Needlepoint Stitches (JoAnne Westerhaus)

Needlepoint is a type of embroidery that completely covers the fabric, called canvas. It can be used not only for wall art, but also for objects like cushions and even chair seats, especially when done with wool. This class will provide an introduction to the basic stitches used in this craft.

Materials:

  • Scissors
  • A kit will be provided containing canvas, thread, needle, and stitching directions. A $5 donation to the Nittany Valley Embroiderers Guild to offset this cost would be appreciated.

Helix knitting allows single-row stripes when knitting in the round, without those jarring jogs. Learn this marvelous technique adaptable to many projects. Prerequisite skills:Cast on, knit, purl, work in the round.

Materials and Homework:

  • Three colors of worsted weight yarn
  • Set of double-pointed needles (or circular for Magic Loop), size US 8
  • Three stitch markers, one different to mark the beginning of the round
  • Preparation:Using one of the colors, cast on 60 stitches, join in the round, and work 1-2 inches in the ribbing style of your choice.

It's nice to have options when it comes to knitting socks. There is no shortage of techniques for just about every aspect of sock knitting, especially heels. But what about toes? At first glance it seems fairly straightforward; however fit, wearability, comfort, and aesthetics are important concerns. Wouldn't it be great if a variety of cast on techniques for toes were available to sock knitters? Turns out, there are!

Come join us for a fun and VERY enlightening hour completely devoted to cast on methods for toe up socks. If you've never knitted a toe up sock before, that's ok. If you've never knitted ANY sock before, that's ok too! All five methods are simple, and several are mind blowing — guaranteed to make you wonder: why didn't I think of that before?

Prerequisite skills:

  • Long-tail cast on
  • Magic Loop

Materials:

  • A 32" or 40" circular needle, size US 7 or 8
  • About 20 yds of practice worsted weight yarn in a LIGHT color
  • Crochet hook
  • Pen and notebook
